The education of people with SEN/ disabilities has evolved over a period of time. The Special education movement can be characterized in four major phases which are; exclusion, segregation , integration and inclusion.
The work below should be done as practice. No need to submit to me.
Group work
Read the article attached and answer the questions that follow:
- Highlight how people with disabilities were treated prior to the 20th century?
- Inclusion of students with disabilities seems to be an advantage. Indicate with two reasons how this is so

IDENTIFICATION AND ASSESSMENT OF LEARNERS WITH DISABILITIES/SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
The topic will cover the aspects on how to identify and assess learners with or suspected disabilities and special educational needs(SEN).

TOPIC 4: UNDERSTANDING HOW STUDENTS LEARN: LEARNING STYLES
It is believed that understanding students’ learning style and preferences can benefit both students and teachers. As students learn in various ways, it appears impossible to change the learning style of each student in the classroom. Instead, teachers might modify their teaching style so as to be more consistent with their students learning style. Ability to do this as a teacher is beneficial to all students including those with SEN/ disabilities as they also have their own favourable learning styles.
TOPIC 5: UNDERSTANDING HEARING IMPAIRMENTS
The topic takes us through understanding learners with hearing impairment. Hearing impairment is a result of hearing loss which occurs through loss or damage to any part of the ear. The loss or damage to the parts of the ear interfere with the proper process of hearing which then affects the quality of sound heard.
TOPIC 6: UNDERSTANDING LEARNING DISABILITIES
Learning disabilities are difficulties or disorders that affect a person’s ability to understand or respond to new information. they can also be described as disorders that affect the ability to remember information that appears to have been taken in. Learning disabilities cause problems with:
- reading (e.g., phonetic knowledge, decoding, reading fluency, word recognition, and comprehension);
- written language (e.g., spelling, writing fluency, and written expression); and
- mathematics (e.g., number sense, computation, math fact fluency, and problem solving).
TOPIC 7: UNDERSTANDING VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS
Since we have already discussed this topic in class, please find notes on visual impairment. Research more on this topic to increase your knowledge. Also work on the activities given to help you understand the topic well.
Visual Impairments refers to any loss of vision which can either be total or partial. The impact of the impairment on learning will vary significantly according to the nature and extent of vision loss: some learners will have been born without vision, some born with low vision, others will have lost it gradually that is at the post-natal stage.
TOPIC 8: UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIOURAL DISORDERS -EBD
Emotional and Behavioural disorders (EBD) is a classification used in educational settings that allows educational institutions to provide necessary support to students who display poor social and/or academic progress.
Learners who show inappropriate behavior (against self or others) or emotions fall under this category of learners with special educational needs.
Learners who show inappropriate behaviour or emotional regulation fall under this group of learners with EBD.
Learners with emotional and behavioral disorders exhibit one or more of these five characteristics:
- An inability to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors.
- An inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers/ elders.
- Inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances.
- A general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression.
- A tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems.
Topic 10
- The topic will cover issues about learners with health impairments and how their health conditions affect their learning.
You have learned about Epilepsy. Test your knowledge by answering questions attached.
Discuss the answers in your different groups.
AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS
Autism spectrum disorders refers to a range of disorders that affect the nerveous system. Autism is characterized by difficulties in communication, social interaction and behaviour.
