Topic outline

  • Introduction to Moodle

This course is designed to introduce you to Moodle and its basic features and functionalities that you will need as you study online.

  • 1 - Resources and Activities in Moodle

    Resources

A resource is an item that a teacher can use to support learning, such as a file or link. Moodle supports different resource types which teachers can add to their courses. Examples of resources in Moodle are File, Page and Links to relevant websites; there are many others that you will be introduced to when necessary.

    Activities

An activity is something that you will do that makes you to interact with other students and or the teacher. Some of the activities that can be used when learning in Moodle are:

Forum - Which allows you to have discussions.

Assignment - Enable teachers to give assignments, grade them and give comments on uploaded files and assignments created on and off line

Quiz - Can be used for simple multiple choice tests to complex assessment tasks.

There are many other activities in Moodle, which your lecturer can introduce to you.

NOTE: All activities can be given start date and time, and also submission date and time.

    • 2 - Examples of Resources

    • 3 - Forum - First Example of an Activity

One of the activities you can find in a course is Forum. Forum is an activity which allows you to engage into discussions of a given topic. The topic can be given by the lecturer or it can be started by another student if given that permission.

The lecturer may decide to grade your contribution in a Forum.

    • 4 - Assignment - Second Example of an Activity

When given an assignment in Moodle you can either be asked to type it in Moodle or type it in Microsoft Word and upload the file in Moodle. Assignment 1 below is that type in which you type your responses in Moodle. Assignment 2 requires you to type the answer to the assignment in Microsoft Word, save the document and then upload it in Moodle.

    • 5 - Quiz - Third Example of an Activity

Your lecturer can give quizzes in Moodle using different types of question, including multiple choice, true-false, short answer, numeric questions and more.

Quizzes may be made in very different ways, so don't expect to always see the same thing when you take a quiz. For example, you may see quiz results as soon as you finish all the questions or even as you submit each question.

You may need to wait until after the quiz deadline, or until all submitted quizzes are graded before results are released.
