The course is a component of science curriculum for first year Diploma in Education Primary. It focuses on Biology and Chemistry. The biology section of this course describes life processes and their significance to living organisms, cell structure including transport of materials into and out of cells: Levels of organization as well as cell specialization and modification, the five-kingdom classification, nutrition in plants and animals as well as reproduction in plants. It also looks into basic ecological terminology and examples. The chemistry part covers Kinetic theory of matter, mixtures and separation methods, Periodic table and trends, atomic structure, metallic and non-metallic elements, their properties and uses. Water: sources, uses, properties, water cycle and simple purification, and pollution. There is also basic coverage on air, its existence and properties; common gases their laboratory preparations, properties, tests and uses.
