The course provides student-teachers with an understanding of the concepts and issues of inclusive education and describes the different types of special needs and how those can be detected in the early years of a child’s growth and development.  It further exposes student teachers to knowledge of the challenges faced by children with special needs in preschools and ECCD settings and therefore suggests procedures to be followed for referrals.  Finally, the concept of inclusive child centred classrooms (CCC) and family-school partnerships are presented as key issues to supporting children’s learning through application of various teaching and learning approaches suitable to each child’s needs.
